Differences in Body Fat Distribution
Women and men differ in how body fat is distributed. On average, women tend to store more subcutaneous fat around the hips, buttocks, and thighs, while men are more likely to store fat around the abdomen and torso.
These differences in body composition and shape can also affect how the body interacts with a chair. For people who sit for long periods, the hips and thighs are key contact areas with the seat cushion. That’s why the cushion’s shape, width, and support should be designed with the body’s natural contours in mind.
